Five dead in poll violence in India’s Manipur state

Among those who died were a woman, a security guard and three election duty staff, when suspected tribal rebels attacked a polling booth in the state’s Chandel district. The militants are suspected to be from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland faction, a police officer said.No group, however, has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.Strife-ridden Manipur, bordering Myanmar, is the first of five Indian states to go to polls in early 2012 to elect a state legislature. The Congress party, which leads the federal coalition government, is expected to retain office.CorCom, an alliance of seven separatist Manipuri groups who view India as a colonial power, blamed the Congress government for degeneration of the Manipuri society … to the present state of social, moral, economic and political bankruptcy (http://bankruptcy.ieurope.net).We are fighting against the Indian occupation of Manipur. So as a part of fighting Indian occupation we ban the Congress and their agents in Manipur, the alliance said in an e-mail received by Reuters late on Friday. The group claimed responsibility for a grenade attack on a Congress candidate’s home last week.

Azarenka bullies Sharapova to claim maiden major

The 22-year-old’s first grand slam title also means that she will become the new world number one when the WTA rankings are released on Monday. While virtually carbon copies of each other in terms of height and playing style, Azarenka had won the two previous finals between the pair, both on hardcourts, and the players’ entrances could not have been more prophetic.Carrying a designer handbag Sharapova was stalked down the tunnel by the hooded Azarenka, exuding a sense of menace as she stayed in the shadows. The mugging by the first timer, when it did come, was brutally efficient. It took until the third game of the match, but by then the visible signs of anxiety(anxiety) were gone.Azarenka had dropped her opening service game, was trailing 2-0 and 0-30 down in her second when she finally realized she had Sharapova’s match.Attacking at every opportunity, Azarenka used her better speed and footwork to absorb and negate the Russian’s power game and bashed her about the baseline at will. The Belarusian overcame the early deficit and broke Sharapova twice on the way to taking the first set in 46 minutes. With the Russian down to one knee, Azarenka did not let up her attack, breaking Sharapova’s serve in the first game of the second set and then holding off a break point in the next game. She soon ran away with the set and the match, claiming the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup when Sharapova blasted a backhand into the net, sending Azarenka sinking to her knees proclaiming I can’t believe it before rushing over to embrace those sitting in her support box. Azarenka became the third woman, after Evonne Goolagong-Cawley and Chris O’Neil, to win the junior and senior singles title at Melbourne Park. She won the junior title in 2005.

Former Boston Mayor Kevin White dies at 82

White, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2003, died at his Boston home, family spokesman George Regan told local media.Boston was torn by racial violence in the 1970s as the city implemented court-ordered busing to desegregate schools. White, who ran the city from 1968 to 1984, was lauded for focusing on protecting children caught in the unrest. He arranged for police escorts for school buses after ones carrying black children were pelted with stones as they arrived in white neighborhoods.White, a Democrat, was also credited with revitalizing Boston’s downtown, including the reopening of the historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace.Tonight is a sad night for the city of Boston, Mayor Thomas Menino said in remarks carried on local news channel 7News, an NBC affiliate.Kevin was the new era of mayors: Young, liberal, progressive, and he’s noted for his belief that the revitalization of downtown was important to making Boston a world-class city, he added.White made an unsuccessful bid for Massachusetts governor in 1970, and two years later was seen as a potential contender to run for vice president alongside George McGovern, but was ultimately passed over.White left political life in 1984, choosing not to seek a fifth term in office, after a number of city officials were indicted following a federal corruption probe into his administration. He was never charged with any crime. After leaving office, White taught at Boston University.

Nadal and Djokovic fire shots ahead of final

The rivalry between Nadal and Serb Djokovic appears set to challenge that of the Spaniard’s long double-act with former world number one Roger Federer. But where Nadal and Swiss Federer’s matchups inspired mutual admiration, the Spaniard’s relationship with Djokovic, the man who poached his top ranking last year, is far more complex and the barbs have been flying from both camps in the leadup.Defending champion Djokovic, dragged into a near five-hour slog with fourth seed Andy Murray on Friday, has a day’s less rest to recover than Nadal, and was thus more happy to talk of their recent head-to-head record.I know that I maybe have a mental edge because I’ve won six finals the five or six times we played in 2011 and I’ve had lots of success against him, said the 24-year-old Djokovic who holds a losing 16-13 record to Nadal, but has beaten him the last six times they have played. The losses, all in finals, included last year’s Wimbledon and U.S. Open crowns. On the other hand, it’s a new year. It’s a new challenge, added Djokovic. It’s a different situation. As I said, he has maybe a day advantage over me for recovery and for getting ready for the finals. While pushed, Nadal finished his four-set semi-final against third seed Federer on Thursday full of running and brimful of confidence, having inflicted an eighth defeat of the Swiss in their record-equalling 10th grand slam encounter. That allowed the 25-year-old the luxury of watching Djokovic on television as the Serb closed out the match against Murray with spare fuel in the tank, despite having appeared a panting, sweating wreck halfway through.Djokovic, who also appeared to struggle before blasting fifth seeded Spaniard David Ferrer in straight sets in their quarter-final, blamed an allergy for giving him a blocked nose and breathing difficulties. A skeptical Nadal, looking relaxed and assured in a white T-shirt, suggested it was mere naked gamesmanship. It’s funny, no? I saw the match yesterday on the TV show on the channel seven when he was in the fifth set moving fantastically well, and they show images from two hours fifty (minutes) before and seems like he was destroyed, the 10-times grand slam champion said on Saturday. Two hours fifty later he was in perfect condition. So it is difficult to imagine that he has these problems. I don’t know. NOT CRAZY UNFAIR4Nadal also returned serve at the suggestion that his extra day’s rest was unfair on Djokovic, given the Spaniard had recovered from a similar position to upset Roger Federer for the 2009 title. Then, Nadal had played a five-hour, 14-minute semi-final over compatriot Fernando Verdasco, the longest match on record at Melbourne Park, before beating Federer in a five-set classic for his first title on the blue hardcourt of Rod Laver Arena.I had only one day and Federer had two, no? he said. I was recovered for the final, so I think you can say it’s unfair, yes, but not crazy unfair.Having one day off, I believe you are not in big trouble. While fitness may ultimately decide who wins the tournament, a lack of it is unlikely to concern either Nadal or four-times grand slam champion Djokovic, bidding for his third title at Melbourne Park. Two of the fittest players on the tour, neither Djokovic nor Nadal will sweat about the possibility of a five-set marathon.Nadal came to Melbourne Park brushing off queries about a shoulder injury, and despite suffering a painful knee twinge the night before his opening match, has steadily returned to his scrambling fist-pumping best.Nadal’s quarter-final win over Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych, where he came back from being one point shy of a two-sets to love deficit, appeared the circuit-breaker and he later spoke of playing his best tennis since the first half of 2011 — before his long run of losses to the Serb.Prior to Murray, Djokovic had only conceded one set for the tournament, to gritty Australian former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, and for all his declared breathing issues, has motored through the tournament with a succession of clinical victories.(Nadal) has a fighting spirit. He has very few weaknesses. He’s very eager and motivated to win the title – as much as I am, said Djokovic. It’s unpredictable what’s going to happen.

U.S., Canada secure Olympic berths

The U.S. reached the Games for a fifth successive time courtesy of a 3-0 win over plucky Costa Rica, who pushed their powerful opponents all the way.Hosts Canada, meanwhile, rode the support of a boisterous crowd at Vancouver’s B.C. Place and a pair of goals from Christine Sinclair to a 3-1 victory over Mexico.Canada and the U.S. will now meet in a pressure-free tournament final on Sunday, both countries having accomplished their objective of securing an Olympic berth. The U.S. had steamrolled into the final four, outscoring their opponents by an astonishing 31-0.But they ran into an inspired Costa Rica and the reigning Olympic champions were lucky to escape the opening half with a 1-0 lead after a 16th minute header from Tobin Heath. In seven meetings the Costa Ricans had never scored against the Americans, but came close twice in the opening half, forcing U.S. keeper Hope Solo to produce her some superb saves. The Central Americans kept the U.S. under considerable pressure after the break until the Americans finally seized control. The favorites added some insurance in the 72nd minute when Abby Wambach’s chip was cleared off the line and Carli Lloyd unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box for a 2-0 lead.Alex Morgan completed the scoring just before the final whistle.Unbeaten in group play, Canada came into the match full of confidence and quickly took the initiative. It took just 15 minutes, Sinclair driving home her eighth goal of the tournament from close range, followed by another from Melissa Tancredi just seven minutes later. Veronica Perez hauled Mexico back into the match when she jumped on a loose ball and smashed it through a crowded goal mouth in the 67th minute to trim the lead to 2-1. With the Canadians on their heels, Mexico continued to press, but Sinclair restored control, taking a superb feed from Tancredi and chipping it over a charging Mexican keeper. I didn’t want to think about it, the possibility of qualifying but this is incredible, Sinclair, told reporters as celebrations erupted on the pitch. When they scored, we never stopped fighting and we got one more there at the end to ice it.

Wade returns to fire Heat to Knicks win

Wade had been sidelined with an ankle injury but already looked back to his best as he and LeBron James (31 points) racked up 10 dunks and 59 points between them to condemn the Knicks to their eighth loss in nine games. At times, the Wade-James combination looked the best it has done this season, and left Miami coach Erik Spoelstra purring. They did a very good job of playing off each other, getting out in the open court, playing off each other on cuts in the half court and one guy being aggressive and the other guy playing off that, said Spoelstra. Then there at the end LeBron really has taken another step forward in terms of his aggressiveness.New York were without their leading forward Carmelo Anthony, who sat out the game with a wrist and ankle injuries and they relied heavily on three point shots – attempting 43 of them, the most in any NBA game this season, making 18.Bill Walker top scored for the Knicks with 21 points – all of them from beyond the arc – for New York, who have just one win this season over a team with a . 00 record. While the Knicks struggle, Miami, who have won five of their last six games at their American Airlines Arena, are starting to click and were clearly delighted to have Wade back.Spoelstra revealed after the game that the Heat had decided to give Wade an extended break in order to get his physical condition back to its best.We had a collective franchise decision on this – we were going to make sure that we would get his body right, he said. In normal years he would probably have tried to play in the Lakers game (on January 20) but we held him out another week just to make sure he felt right. Wade shot 11 of 19 on field goals and was on court for 32. 4 minutes looking sharp from the outset with an early dunk that brought a huge roar from the crowd. I just tried to be aggressive, after being out for a while, one of the best ways to get your rhythm is to attack the basket, said Wade. The Heat are now set for a clash with Eastern Conference leaders, the Chicago Bulls, on Sunday, a repeat of last season’s Conference Finals which Miami won before going on to lose to Dallas in the NBA Finals.

Success brings confidence, not pressure, says Nadal

But Rafa Nadal would swap places with him in a heartbeat. The Spaniard, who will face Djokovic in Sunday’s Melbourne final, believes the world number one’s stellar run in 2011 would bring him confidence, not added pressure. It’s a fantastic situation to be in, Nadal told reporters on Saturday. It’s really not a tough one. When you are coming with that confidence everything is a little bit easier.Djokovic kicked off a career-defining year by winning the Australian Open and went on to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open while compiling a remarkable 70-6 record over the season.Nadal knows perhaps better than anyone what kind of impact such a streak of success can have on a player’s psyche. The Spaniard came into last year’s Melbourne Park tournament seeking the Rafa Slam after winning the final three majors of 2010.While he went out in the quarter-finals to David Ferrer, pressure had nothing to do with it, he says.I was a little bit unlucky here last year when I played for the grand slam, he added. I didn’t feel extra pressure. That’s true. I had an injury in the quarter-finals so I was out. I think for (Djokovic) it’s an advantage, not a pressure, to be in that situation. ‘BIG, BIG TEST’2Nadal, who arrived at his news conference an hour late after getting the time wrong, came into the year’s first grand slam under an injury cloud with shoulder and knee problems but has looked stronger as the tournament has gone on. Djokovic, meanwhile, has companied of allergy issues and his breathing looked labored in recent games, particularly in the early stages of his five-set semi-final win over Britain’s Andy Murray on Friday. Nadal was skeptical there was anything wrong with the Serb. It’s funny, I saw the match yesterday on TV … and they show images from two hours, 50 (minutes) before and it seems like he was destroyed, he said. Two hours, 50 later he was in perfect condition. So it’s difficult to imagine he has these problems.Nadal holds the upper hand against Djokovic at 16 wins to the Serb’s 13, but recent finals have gone the way of the world number one.The Mallorcan acknowledged there would be no quarter asked or given on Sunday. He is the favorite after being number one in the world and after playing fantastic and beating me the last six times, added Nadal, who beat Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych in the previous two rounds. Now it’s another big, big test. I don’t know if I am ready enough to win the match tomorrow but I believe that I can do it and I am going to fight for it.

Carnival Corp’s Arison at courtside for Heat game

The 62-year-old billionaire sat courtside at the American Airlines Arena on Miami’s waterfront to watch an NBA basketball game between the New York Knicks and the star-studded Miami Heat team, which he owns along with roughly half of the global cruise line industry.Arison has been heavily criticized in media reports for failing to put in an appearance at the site of the accident, as bodies were still being pulled from the wrecked ship operated by Carnival unit Costa Cruises. But the invisible CEO, as he was dubbed in one report, looked cheerful at times and very calm, as he watched the Heat beat the Knicks from his courtside perch behind a broadcast table.Clad in a sport coat and open-necked shirt, Arison appeared to exchange few words with anyone and left the arena immediately after the game ended. At least 16 bodies have been recovered since the massive Costa Concordia cruise liner, with more than 4,200 passengers and crew aboard, capsized after a gaping hole was torn into its hull. The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest and has been widely blamed for the accident for steering too close to the Tuscan island’s shore.Arison has expressed his condolences in statements issued since the Costa Concordia wreck and given personal assurances that all victims of the tragedy would be taken care of.
